The last few Block H classes I’ve been working with the sandbox. Our sandbox install of Moodle, WordPress and Mahara is where I can test things out, better understand these tools and start thinking about an implementation plan for next year. Familiarizing myself with the web interface for the sandbox server, updating the Moodle install to version 2.0, making the WordPress install multisystem ,though I have some problem with the rewrite rules, were the main items I worked on.

After struggling with WordPress for a while I thought I would spend some time with Moodle and started looking at the changes in the Appearance settings for Moodle 2.0.

Appearance – Creating the Menu System

Started trying out the tools in the sandbox. As usual I started by looking at appearances. The menu creating system in Moodle looks interesting. This will mean we can easily create menus for the different tools we use and when teachers switch themes students can have some standard locations for the menu items.

Another Theme

As you can see the menu system works in the other themes.

Menu Appearance

I like the collapsed menu system availble with some themes in Moodle 2. Clicking on the icon collapses the menu to the left hand side and the menu expands on rollover. Gives you a lot more space on the actual page. Clicking on the light blue rectangle displays the menu like I was used to with Moodle 1.9.

Add the Menu

To create the menu system navigate to Page path Home / ? Site administration / ? Appearance / ? Themes / ? Theme settings. Once there add your menu items Name | URL | Mouse Tip.
– creates a sub menu
–creates a sub sub menu.
