Lesson Google Earth
Remembering:
Questions to consider. What did I do? What was the lesson? Did it address all the content? Was it completed on time? How did students “score” on the assessment?
- Lesson was given on how to add placemarkers to Google Earth and how to add text, video and images to a placemarker.
- Lesson was completed on time.
- Assessment was through observation of students as they were working through their part of the lesson.
Understanding:
Questions to consider. Can I explain the major components of the lesson? Do I understand how they connect with the previous / next unit of study? Where does this unit fit into the curriculum? What instructional strategies were used? Did I follow best practices and address the standards?
Curriculum Connection
- This lesson is part of my digital identity unit. In the unit I examine different graphic types and students create reflective blogs posts. The Google Earth tour is part of a reflective post dealing with their week without walls trip to Laos. In addition, skills needed to resize graphic images and creating links to graphic images are reinforced from earlier lessons.
Instructional Strategies
- Class time is 90 minutes so a 10 minute demonstration was given on how to add placemarkers to Google Earth and how to add text, video and images to a placemarker.
- This was followed by a 20 minute see and do session. Students followed my instructions as I went through the steps required to add a graphic to a placemarker they watched and then duplicated what I had done.
- Students were also shown how to embed a video from Youtube into a placemarker.
Application:
Questions to consider. When did I do this before? Did I build on content, product or process from previous lessons? How does this lesson scaffold the learning for the next lesson? How could I adapt the instructional approach to another lesson? How could this lesson be modified for different learners?
- some components such as resizing graphics and embedding items into a blog were covered in previous grades or lessons. The creation of a Google Earth tour was new.
Where could I use this again?
- This was an introductory lesson. It will be followed with a project where students will be given three periods to create a tour, using their own photos and videos, of their trip to Laos. With the learning that took place this could be used by other teachers wishing to incorporate a Google Earth Tour into their lessons.
Evaluation:
Questions to consider. How well did I do? What worked? What do I need to improve? What are we learning and is it important? Were my assumptions about student background knowledge and skills accurate? Were any elements of the lesson more effective than other elements? Did some aspects need improvement? Were the needs of all learners met? What levels of mastery did students reach? What have I learned about my strengths and my areas in need of improvement? How am I progressing as a teacher?
The lesson went well the introduction and see and do activity worked well. Need to look at how I can make the lesson material available online. Noticed that the grouping of students left some students not participating but just watching. Need to create some time based exchange so all students are part of the creation process. Need to use a different method to better get an idea of the level of understanding the students have upon completion of the lesson
Creation:
How would I incorporate the best aspects of this lesson in the future? What changes would I make to correct areas in need of improvement? How can I best use my strengths to improve? What steps should I take or resources should I use to meet my challenges? Is there training or networking that would help me to meet my professional goals?
The basic structure of the lesson was fine. I need to add notes, or have student generate notes. Make the notes available prior to the lesson and have students look at them as a homework activity. I also need to look at how I can more quickly assess student understanding of the material I delivered.
Am thinking about using this idea with Easy Voter and Moodle to get quick feedback.
