In our design hunt activity I asked students to go for a walk and take photos of designed elements found at SSIS. I introduced the design hunt via a short keynote presentation, shown below in video form. This presentation introduced design and designed elements through a look at some of the new items in my room. During the presentation I talked about how the design of the moveable stations came about. Input from others resulting in a change in design from a box like structure to one that had overhangs. I was surprised by how many students were fascinated by retractable power points! This continued for other new items found in the room.
We then headed outside for our hunt! After the design hunt the students created a keynote that looked at the following items.
Consider why the design element was added. What is the impact of the designed element on the surroundings. One question or comment you would have for the designer and/or anything else you want to consider.
We are fortunate that the designer of the area we looked at is part of the school community so would be able to answer the questions the students have.
I find this activity changes the way you look at spaces. In general students thought the activity made them consider what was around them more. ” I wonder why the rocks were placed there?” “It was interesting how the outdoor electrical outlets had a plastic case added so that rainwater would not get in.”
We will complete the activity today for one class and tomorrow for another and in the next post we will look at a sampling of student presentations. For my students this presentation and their thoughts regarding the activity will be added to their iBook based course portfolio.
