Sometimes you read a blog post that reminds you to try something out. This week, via a Hype tweet, I was reminded about beacons. The blog post, on the Locly blog, described how you could use beacons with Hype. Because of this I started looking at them again and ordered some from Estimote (by way of China) so I could experiment more. They aren’t here yet but after a bit of reading I found that you could use an IOS device to act as a beacon and this way I could test using Locly.
The Locly app, for iPad and iPhone, allows you to create cards of information. You can go here to find out more about creating these card based projects. You can create a variety of types of cards. I created a simple page made up of text and an image. Also a few cards with external links to content I have made. When I saw that widgets were also available this meant that any of the widgets I created for my iBooks using, The Bookery, BookWidgets or Hype could also be used.
All sorts of possibilities. From a different way of showing student work to supplementing any of the displays we have at our school. Think this is something we will do in my classes next year.
The video below shows my Locly project in action.
