Line Art

My first teaching job was as a replacement for a teacher who went on a medical leave over spring break. A Math elective was one of the courses I had to teach. We did a variety of math related activities building scale models, looking at math puzzles and line art.

I liked line art.

On simple part of it involved drawing line segments from points on the y-axis to points on the x-axis. You could start at (0,100) on the y axis and draw a line to (5,0) on the x-axis. Continuing with a pattern such that the y value on the y-axis decrements by five while the x value on the x-axes increments by five so the next line would start at (0,95) on the y-axis and go to (10,0) on the x-axis.

This results with something that looks like the drawing below. I have used this, in the past, to look at patterns and the use of variables with Scratch. Will be trying this again with grade six this year.
