Started a new exploration with Badges, as what I had hoped to do originally didn’t work out. So I will use them with a smaller group of kids and try adding them to my DEAR (drop everything and read) class.
Today I created the badges. I am using the images below for my Quests Badges and for the final Dear Badge. I have these in my Credly account as this way I can use the BadgeOS plugin with the WordPress blog I have set up for this experiment.
So I need to create the quests. When each quest is completed the students earn a quest badge. When the students have earned all of their quest Badges the Final Dear Pro Ringbearer Badge will be rewarded. Pretty sure I am only half understanding this but will learn as I try it all out.
AI asked our amazing EAL teacher Stacy for suggestions and I decided this would be the criteria for the first quest:
- pick a book in their Lexile range
- read the book
- pick out five different words and define them using context clues
- create a blog reflection
When this is completed the students earn their Quest Badge.
With each next Quest add some different items:
- Instead of a blog reflection a book talk or a poster or a video trailer for the book.
- Pick a book of a different genre
As I looked at this a bit more I see that:
- some badges look pretty boring so I asked a few students….. they agreed.
- So I think I will add a different icon to the reading badges……… oooh the title is bland as well so I asked a few students….. they agreed.
- So I am have some grade 6 consultants to help me out with names and icons.
- I can start setting up the rest of this to see how it works.
