I have my students use Flickr, and encourage them to use copyright friendly graphics. I have shown them Flickr Creative Commons and how to use images found there. I
also have shown them how to use tools such as Wylio or Photopin, their current favorite, to find and link CC appropriate images to their blog. As you can see even on the same blog sometimes they cite correctly and sometimes they don’t. With time, especially with our students blogging at a younger age, I think this will change.
As I have mentioned before in a unit reflection the one thing that I have not done well is to get students to consider Fair Use. Recently this came up again in a conversation with Robert. He asked my thoughts about a project that one of his groups had completed. Their work is creative and really well done but they use copyrighted characters in the cartoon. Looks fine to me but who am I? In the end, however, this is a conversation that the kids need to be part of.
When working with projects have the students consider Fair Use. Use the pdf found on Copyright Confusion. Better yet make a copy of the Google form found on that same page. Or perhaps this form.
