Assessment and Copyright

In week four we looked at measurement of online learning.  For me the biggest takeaway was that I will incorporate short formative online assessments to more quickly:

  • gauge how effective my lesson was.
  • find areas students had difficulties with.
  • individualize instruction.

I will try this in September using the quiz activity in Moodle and perhaps other tools such as Socrative Teacher.

However, the most interesting part of this module were the readings and the research I did  on copyright and Creative Commons. I ended up on a blog post by Colette Cassinelli, someone I follow on Twitter and on my RSS feeds. Her post described how she worked with her students in getting them to understand how to use a Creative Commons  license with their content. I work with students showing them how to use copyright friendly content on their blogs and multimedia projects with tools such as Wylio. However,   I need to do more to have students understand the Creative Commons license and to make decisions about how the license might be applied to their content.

On top of reading about Creative Commons licensing a comment by Kristin Hokanson, made me realize that I have done little in getting my students to understand copyright and fair use. In addition to looking at usage licenses I need to have them consider how copyrighted material could be used within their works. I will check out the material found on, Copyright Confusion and Media Education Lab, as I update and create units.
