Ebooks
A while back I was wondering what the effect of a gadget like an Ipad might have on ebooks.
customs, censorship, cost to deliver, cost for book, gadgets like the Ipad will make international school purchasing interesting 5:27 AM Apr 9th via TweetDeck
I have been using electronic version of the textbook for the last three years in my programming class. Although each student has a copy of the textbook it makes a lot of sense to have each chapter available as a pdf. Lately I have also seen online textbooks with share and remix licensing and with states like “Texas concerned about high cost of printed textbooks and the rapidity with which they become outdated” (Edweek) you can sense change is coming.
After looking at how Iphone and Ipad book Apps currently look and might look, Alice for the Ipad, Curious George’s Dictionary for the iPhone & iPod Touch, or iPad iMagineering – Penguin Books – DK it doesn’t take much to see the possibilities for different types of textbooks.
Within days of the iPad announcement, a group of major educational publishers announced they all would use technology developed by ScrollMotion…. [with the possibility of books that] have live glossaries, audio and video notes users can create right in the text, taking live quizzes and having them scored in the book (Scrollmotion)
Although this is a press release you have to wonder how the textbook landscape might change.
However, I don’t think much will change will come in time for my daughter and son who currently spend way too much for textbooks!!
